Another Pedestrian Hit on VCU Campus Week After Student’s Death

Another pedestrian hit on VCU campus has once again raised concerns about traffic safety in the area. The latest incident occurred on Thursday, Feb. 2, at approximately 9:12 p.m., when a commercial vehicle struck a pedestrian at the intersection of West Grace and North Harrison Streets.
VCU Police responded to the scene, and the commercial vehicle driver was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The injured pedestrian was transported to a local hospital for treatment. At this time, authorities have not released details on the severity of the injuries.
Growing Safety Concerns on Campus
This accident comes just one week after the tragic death of VCU student Mahrokh Khan, who was fatally struck while crossing the street at Laurel and West Main Streets on Jan. 27. Her passing has sparked renewed discussions about pedestrian safety, with students and community members calling for stronger measures to protect those walking on and around campus.
VCU officials and city authorities have acknowledged the growing concerns. Corey Byers, VCU’s senior public relations specialist, emphasized the need for increased awareness and adherence to traffic rules.
“There are many drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians on VCU’s campuses,” Byers stated. “While we continue to work with the city, we respectfully ask everyone to be aware of their surroundings and to practice safe habits.”
In response to these incidents, VCU has urged drivers to remain attentive, avoid distractions such as cell phones, and obey all traffic laws. Pedestrians and cyclists are also encouraged to exercise caution, wear reflective clothing at night, and stay within designated crosswalks and bike lanes.
Legal Rights and Compensation for Pedestrian Accident Victims
Victims of pedestrian accidents may be entitled to financial compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Depending on the circumstances, they may also have grounds for a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver or any responsible parties. In cases involving severe injuries or wrongful death, compensation can extend to funeral expenses and emotional distress suffered by the victim’s family.
When a driver fails to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, as in this case, the injured party may pursue legal action to recover damages. This can include coverage for ongoing medical treatments, rehabilitation costs, and even lost earning potential if the injuries result in long-term disability.
