Steps to Take After a Motorcycle Accident

Richmond Police Search for Suspect in Deadly Pedestrian Crash after a tragic hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a local woman. Authorities are seeking public assistance in identifying a person of interest connected to the fatal collision which occurred last month on West Main Street.

Details of the Fatal Hit-and-Run

The incident occurred on Wednesday, February 5, at approximately 10:50 p.m. Richmond Police officers responded to a call regarding a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in the 2600 block of West Main Street. Upon arrival, they discovered 52-year-old Ruthanne Berry lying unresponsive on the roadway. Emergency responders rushed her to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, but sadly, she succumbed to her injuries the following day.

According to the Richmond Police Department’s crash investigation team, Berry was walking southbound on North Robinson Street when she attempted to cross West Main Street at a designated crosswalk. At that moment, a dark-colored sedan approached at high speed, striking her before continuing westbound without stopping.

Ongoing Investigation

Investigators have determined that the driver left a parking lot at 1911 West Main Street at approximately 10:46 p.m., just four minutes before the fatal collision. Surveillance footage and eyewitness reports suggest the vehicle may have been a sedan, but authorities are still working to confirm its make and model.

The Richmond Police Department is urging anyone with information to come forward. They are specifically looking for witnesses who may have seen the vehicle in the moments leading up to the crash or have knowledge of the driver’s identity.

Compensation for Victims and Their Families

Hit-and-run accidents leave victims and their families facing not only emotional devastation but also financial hardship. In cases like this, surviving family members may be entitled to wrongful death compensation, which can cover:

  • Medical Expenses: Costs incurred before the victim’s passing.
  • Funeral and Burial Costs: The financial burden of laying a loved one to rest.
  • Loss of Income: If the deceased was a financial provider, families may seek compensation for lost wages.
  • Pain and Suffering: Emotional distress experienced by surviving loved ones.

In cases where the driver is identified, the victim’s family can file a wrongful death lawsuit to seek justice. However, if the driver remains unknown, uninsured motorist coverage may still provide financial relief.
