Virginia State Police Responds to 136 Accidents as Winter Storm Hits
RICHMOND, VA-Virginia State Police has investigated 136 accidents across two districts as the season’s first winter storm sweeps through the Commonwealth. From noon to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 5, the Wytheville District saw 85 crashes, including three injury crashes, while the Salem District recorded 51 accidents, four of which involved injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported so far.
As winter weather impacts roads, Virginia State Police is stepping up its response by deploying additional troopers on 12-hour shifts to ensure public safety. These enhanced patrols aim to provide quick responses and support for drivers during these hazardous conditions. With winter storms often bringing treacherous conditions, state police are urging drivers to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions recommended by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
The risks of winter driving are significant, especially with icy and slick conditions on highways and local roads. VDOT has issued several key recommendations for drivers to consider to reduce the chances of accidents. Among these, the most important advice is to use headlights to increase visibility, allow drivers to spot dangerous patches of ice or snow, and ensure others see them. Slowing down is another critical safety measure, as reduced speed allows drivers to control their vehicles better on slippery roads. It’s also crucial not to tailgate; increased stopping distances are necessary when roads are slick, and maintaining more space between vehicles can help prevent rear-end collisions.
Virginia State Police also remind drivers to buckle up, as seatbelts are essential in protecting occupants from injury in the event of a crash, especially in winter weather when sliding off roads or colliding with guardrails is more common. Additionally, ensuring your vehicle is properly prepared for the conditions is a step many drivers overlook. Before heading out, it’s important to check the tire tread, windshield wipers, and fluid levels and ensure the battery is in good working order. Keeping essential items such as a window scraper, blanket, bottled water, snacks, a cell phone charger, and a flashlight in the vehicle can also be lifesaving if the worst happens.
