Pedestrian Fatally Struck After Driver Veers Onto Sidewalk

RICHMOND, Va. – A pedestrian was fatally struck Tuesday morning after a driver lost control and veered onto the sidewalk in the 2300 block of Chamberlayne Avenue, according to Richmond Police.
Authorities reported that a vehicle traveling southbound suddenly left the roadway, mounted the sidewalk, and hit a pedestrian before crashing into a structure. The vehicle continued along the sidewalk, colliding with an unoccupied car before finally stopping.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where the pedestrian, whose identity has not yet been released, was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, the driver and a female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for medical evaluation.
The crash led to a temporary road closure, with both lanes of Chamberlayne Avenue shut down for several hours as investigators worked to determine the cause of the accident. Authorities have not yet disclosed whether speed, impairment, or other factors played a role in the incident.
Compensation for Victims and Their Families
In tragic pedestrian accidents like this, victims and their families may be entitled to compensation for their losses. Wrongful death claims can provide financial relief for funeral expenses, medical costs incurred before death, lost wages, and the emotional pain and suffering of losing a loved one if the driver was negligent—whether due to reckless driving, distracted driving, or impairment—the victim’s family may have grounds to pursue legal action. Additionally, surviving passengers who were injured in the crash may also be eligible to seek compensation for their medical bills, lost income, and emotional distress.
