Man Arrested After Tractor-Trailer Driver Shot Dead in I-295 Crash

A tragic incident unfolded on I-295 South when a tractor-trailer driver was shot and killed, leading to a fatal crash. The Virginia State Police have since arrested a suspect in connection with this horrifying event.
The incident occurred on Friday, Jan. 31, around 11:30 p.m., when authorities responded to a crash near the 25-mile marker on I-295 South. Upon arrival, officers discovered 58-year-old Silvio Sobrinho, the driver of the tractor-trailer, dead from a gunshot wound.
The investigation revealed that Sobrinho’s vehicle, traveling in the left lane, was struck by another tractor-trailer in the center lane. The impact forced Sobrinho’s truck off the road, where it collided with a metal guardrail before coming to a stop.
A witness driving in the northbound lane noticed the crash, exited the highway, and rushed to the scene. They found the victim slumped over the steering wheel and immediately contacted authorities. When police arrived, a trooper performed CPR, but tragically, Sobrinho was pronounced dead at the scene. Further examination of the vehicle uncovered multiple bullet holes on the passenger side of Sobrinho’s tractor unit. The suspect’s truck is described as a white tractor-trailer with green lettering.
After nearly two weeks of investigation, law enforcement made a breakthrough. On Thursday, Feb. 13, 55-year-old Tony Ray Williams of Fort Pierce, Florida, was arrested by the Fort Pierce Police Department. Williams has been charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He remains in custody and will be extradited to Henrico as the investigation continues into the events that led to this fatal encounter.
Compensation at Stake for Victims
This tragic case raises important questions about the compensation available to victims and their families in such incidents. Victims of fatal crashes involving criminal acts, such as this shooting, may be entitled to various forms of compensation. This includes funeral expenses, lost wages, loss of companionship, and pain and suffering endured by surviving family members. For professional drivers like Silvio Sobrinho, his family may also seek compensation for the economic support he provided, as well as any emotional and psychological impact caused by his untimely death. The potential for a civil lawsuit against the responsible party further ensures that justice is pursued not only in the criminal courts but also in securing financial recovery for the affected family.
