17-Year-Old Identified as I-95 Fatal Crash Victim

17-Year-Old Identified as I-95 Fatal Crash Victim when troopers from Virginia State Police arrived on the scene of a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 95 South near Brook Road in Henrico County shortly after 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. The victim, a teenager from the Crewe area of Nottoway County, was pronounced dead at the scene after being struck by a passing vehicle.
According to the preliminary state police report, a 2004 Toyota Camry was traveling in the left lane of I-95 South when it struck the rear of a 2012 Honda Pilot. The Toyota driver then maneuvered onto the right shoulder to inspect the damage, while the Honda Pilot came to rest partly within the left lane.
At that point, the 17-year-old occupant of the Pilot exited her vehicle—likely intending to assess the collision’s aftermath—when a 2022 Honda Civic heading southbound in the left lane collided with her and the back end of the stopped SUV. The Civic veered off the roadway and impacted the guardrail before coming to a halt.
Emergency responders pronounced the teen deceased at the scene. Her mother and other family members, who were inside the Honda Pilot at the time of the crash, were understandably shaken but did not suffer serious injuries. Emergency personnel on site ensured that next of kin were notified before the young woman was transported. No additional injuries have been reported, and no arrests have been made as the investigation continues.

Virginia State Police continue to piece together the events leading up to the fatal impact. Investigators interview witnesses and review any available dash-cam or surveillance footage to determine factors such as speed, visibility, and driver attention. Road conditions at the time were reported as dry, with clear skies and moderate traffic, though the precise circumstances remain under review.
Drivers must exercise caution when approaching a disabled vehicle on the interstate. Slowing down, moving over a lane when possible, and activating hazard lights can prevent secondary collisions. The Virginia “Move Over” law requires motorists to shift away from stopped emergency vehicles and tow trucks displaying flashing lights;. However, this incident involved private cars; the same principles of caution apply.
